Who this task will support
Braywick Nature Centre
Working in partnership with Groundwork South, Braywick Nature Centre acts as a community hub to promote awareness of the natural environment with events, walks and talks across the borough, and through educational sessions for school, youth and other groups. The service also offers support for local conservation and amenity groups. The nature centre houses displays and exhibitions on wildlife, sustainability and local history, and has a large classroom for use by schools and other groups and is only open to the public when events are taking place. The nature centre is situated in an old stable block, originally part of the estate belonging to Braywick Lodge. The 19th century mansion house was demolished in 1969, however the stables were refurbished in 1989 to provide a centre for environmental activities in the borough.

The plan for this session is to meet near the flagpole by the Ockwells car park at 10am, straight after junior park run. If it is your first GoodGym session, look out for friendly faces and red GoodGym t-shirts. We will share out equipment including spades and tree guards and then walk together approximately 1km to the planting site. If you want to bring your own spade you are welcome to. Conditions will be muddy, boggy and uneven underfoot, so wellies or sturdy walking boots are recommended rather than trainers.

At the planting site we'll show everyone where and how to plant the trees, and how to support and protect them. We will be aiming to plant between 100 and 200 trees, including a mix of native species.

The trees we plant today will help connect areas of ancient woodland, creating a great haven for flora and fauna, as well as helping fight the battle against climate change. We are unlikely to see the site mature within our lifetimes, but we hope it will be appreciated by future generations... and in the meantime we'll certainly enjoy a sociable outing of planting and soaking up nature!

We expect to be back in the car park by 12.15pm but if you know your way around the park and need to leave sooner then you may do so.

You may be aware there was a family friendly tree planting event hosted by RBWM last year and you might be hoping you can bring children along to this session. I'm sorry to say this session is for GoodGym only, and we can only accommodate those aged 18 and over.
