Who this task will support
Borough Food Cooperative
The food cooperative provides members with low cost food to help reduce food bills and tackle food insecurity. It also reuses surplus food to prevent food being thrown away.

Background to BFC

The Borough Food Cooperative (BFC) vision is to provide good quality, healthy food options in an inclusive and cost effective way. Fighting food costs and fighting food waste together for the greater good.

In their shop, members can choose up to 16 grocery items for £4.50 each time they come.

They are not a food bank and our approach offers our customers the opportunity to access food with autonomy, choice and dignity whilst contributing to our mission to reduce unnecessary food waste.

The majority of their ever-changing stock is donated to them by The Felix Project and FareShare, vendors at Borough Market and other local businesses. This donation is by City Harvest.

The task

Each volunteering experience with BFC is different. There are roles for those who want to be hands-on with food and roles for those who want to deliver their service off-site to their more vulnerable or isolated customers (usually on Fridays).

Shop Stock Volunteer

Tasks include:

  • unloading deliveries
  • creating mixed trays of food
  • quality control: checking and grading fresh food
  • visual merchandising the shop floor in compliance with our shop policy
  • cleaning tasks

*Due to the nature of our operation, current roles all require standing, walking, and lifting. Manual handling training can be provided, and staff will be on hand to support you.

What you’ll get from the experience

  • Being part of a close, supportive, and thriving food charity
  • A sense of purpose and fulfilment
  • Opportunity to learn new skills and gain different experiences
  • Fitness in a sociable environment
  • Opportunity to support your local community

Your Impact

Your contribution will have a direct social and environmental impact: Fighting Food Waste and Fighting Food Costs, side by side, and providing our customers with great quality, affordable food! Volunteers are the heartbeat of the BFC, and they couldn’t do what they do without the support from amazing people like you!

What else do I need to know?

There will be no GoodGym leader or taskforce member. Please say you are volunteering with GoodGym and ask for the Shift Leader upon arrival. Thanks!
