30 Minutes To Change A Life
Why did Mrs P say “I f***ing love you guys”?
February 27, 2025
98% of older people that receive help from someone at GoodGym say they are happier because of it.
Mrs P was tired of watching her drawers fall apart. The drawers, a set her and her late husband brought 17 years ago, were breaking and she could do nothing about it. Her bedroom was in disarray and her diagnosis of muscle wastage and laboured breathing, alongside a lack of social or familial circle to help, kept her with a constant reminder she’d rather do without.
“I was feeling depressed. I was very down, waking up looking at my drawers. Watching them fall apart was horrendous, I felt terrible”. The feelings were amplified by her guilt, letting her late husband's furniture fall to disuse. It became apparent Mrs P had no one to turn to for help. The task of getting rid of old drawers should have been easy, but with no one around it was impossible. She recalls a sense of nowhere to go, and no one to turn to. “I’m on my own 24 hours a day and have no one to help. You [GoodGym] made a big change to my life. It was a 100% positive. It has meant more to me than anything this year.”
GoodGymers Sheila, Jen and Georgeta would visit Mrs P 4 times in the following months, removing her and her late husband's old drawers and replacing them with newly built cabinets. “They [Goodgymers] built my beautiful cabinets; they've changed everything for me. They were just amazing, they changed my life”.
For Mrs P the cabinets were more than just somewhere to store her clothes, they were a burden that felt insurmountable, and the impact to her mental health was drastic. GoodGymers removed the drawers and with them, the guilt and isolation she had been feeling. The visits Mrs P received were important opportunities to socialise too, sometimes a friendly-faced GoodGymer is just what the doctor ordered. A fleeting visit means the world to someone who goes days without contact.
GoodGym Missions
Sheila, Jen and Georgeta visited 30 - 40 mins at a time. GoodGym missions are designed to be convenient and easy. Before putting your name to anything you know exactly what you’re doing, when, and for how long. You get in, help with a practical task around the house, maybe secure a biscuit or two, then you’re off.
The GoodGymers that helped Mrs P kept it manageable, building the drawers one day, dismantling the old the following week, but the help she received left her beaming. When talking about her experience with GoodGym she said she’s told everyone she can about how great we were.
Sheila, a GoodGymer who helped at all 4 of the sessions for Mrs P, left this at the bottom of her final report.
Ms P was delighted with the progress, and as we departed she declared 'I f***ing love you guys'. I think that's one happy customer!
