Rachel, Sheila and Amanda joined local volunteers and Councilor Karen Davies to prepare Windsor Cemetery for the upcoming annual Remembrance Day services.
Windsor Cemetery, also known as Spital Cemetery, is the oldest of our four cemeteries in Windsor and was first opened in 1854.
Amanda artfully tied poppies to the cemetery railings with a local resident and her granddaughter whilst Iris and Margaret from the Friends of Spital made short work of weeding around the white Cross of Sacrifice. Rachel and Karen did a great job picking up all of the litter around the cemetery before Rachel moved on to help Sheila uncover a Commonwealth War grave for Trooper William George Knight who died aged just 27 in 1920. A little bit of internet research tells us that he was the son of William and Mary Knight, of The Stables, Cumberland Lodge, Great Park, Windsor. William was part of the 2nd Life Guards and Guards Machine Gun Regiment. We also uncovered another grave of a Frederick Border and his grandson, hidden under a giant bush.
Another successful mission completed at Spital Cemetery. We will hopefully be back again one last time before the end of the year.
