The Thin Red Vine
2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Ealing.
- Sunday, 10th of September 2023
Kash and Sevan arrived at Mrs J's house, walked in, then were quickly shooed back outside. Mrs J put a mask on and apologised, saying she was worried that she might have Covid.
After all the effort of getting help organised for her large back garden, Mrs J didn't want the duo to walk through her flat to the back garden. Sevan suggested that he and Kash could do some weeding in the front, then Mrs J's neighbour said
Why don't you open the side entrance for them?
A great idea Mrs J agreed. Her neighbour added
At least one of us has a brain!
Mrs J's back garden was large and mostly looked quite tidy. Her grandson had visited recently with a friend to cut the tall shrubs, so there was only a bit of work left to trim the bushes that had finished flowering. Sevan again saw more opportunities, asking about the ivy coming over from the neighbouring garden. Mrs J said that it was a good idea to cut it back as it would weaken the wall, but the GoodGymers needed to be careful as it had been trimmed in the past and it had almost killed off the vines on her neighbour's side too.
Kash and Sevan agreed a level to cut the ivy to with Mrs J and got going. They had to prise the firmly stuck ivy vines off the wall, so a little area took a long time. While Sevan was still battling the vines, Kash managed to move on and trim other bushes in the garden.
Near the end of the mission, Mrs J came to see the progress and said
The line is good
Great, thought Kash and Sevan. They must've cut the ivy to the right height, so they moved on to tidying up and packing bags with the cuttings.
As the GoodGymers were leaving, Mrs J chatted cheerily about an upcoming trip. Only then did the duo realise that Mrs J was talking about the line on her Covid test being good, not the ivy. Still, she was grateful that the ivy was gone and really happy that GoodGym had come to tidy her garden.
