Sevan arrived at the Soup Kitchen dead on 6pm when the doors opened to clients and had to muscle his way in. When he got there, he was sent right back out of the door to be security for the clothing collection.
🥘
Divya was there soon after and started handing out the snack and grocery bags 🛍️. Today's meal was quite traditional, cottage pie, but some of the other food items were more unusual. There were 2 crates full of tomatoes, a box of green chillies, a giant pack of streaky bacon - use by today - and a 2kg tub of red pepper hummous.
Some people's eyes were bigger than their capacity to get the food home. One client tore 2 carrier bags before giving up on the hummous.
👗👖
On the clothing side things were pretty quiet for the first hour other than grumbles about "2 items only", but that was soon to change. First one client tried some distraction to swipe a pile of underwear which was confronted and retrieved, then an Irish siren came in and started to serenade the volunteers 👩🎤. She belted out some classics, Crazy by Patsy Clyne, Nothin' But A Heartache by the Doobie Brothers and and a tribute to Tina Turner with What's Love Got To Do With It. After 15 minutes, everyone was trying to get her to move on, so she ended up at Divya's counter where she started all over again!
🎂
As things quietened down, Madhan who'd taken the first shift, came back with his friends to share some of his birthday cake with all of the Soup Kitchen helpers which was hugely appreciated by all.
