Shelving another problem
1 GoodGymer made their way to help an isolated older person in Liverpool.
- Monday, 19th of June 2023
Mrs V and her husband have lived happily in their home for around 60 years, and have made many home improvements during that time.
Mr V, had put up a substantial set of shelves that had served them well for about 40 years! Following a bathroom renovation, Mrs V found herself with a large storage unit, but no space to put it back in the bathroom.
Constant pain in her legs and feet means that Mrs V has to use a wheelchair to move about downstairs, and has a stair lift to access upstairs...besides this difficulty, she somehow managed to drag the heavy unit across the landing, hoping to put it in their small front bedroom...there was one obstacle to remove, though...part of the very well made, solidly attached to the wall shelving.
That's where GG came in...armed with a range of screwdrivers and a saw, I spent the next hour taking down Mr V's handiwork...he popped up to see how I was getting on at one point, and we had a lovely chat. Now living with dementia, and being in his 80's, Mr V had tried to remove the shelves himself, but it had proven to be too difficult.
Mrs V was delighted to have easy access to the bedroom, and her storage unit.
Before I left, we had a chat about other help that GG can provide, so I may be popping back sometime soon...watch this space.
Mrs V thanked me for my help, and I explained how much our volunteers gained from the tasks that we do, and the people that we meet.
