Today we had a less exertive job than normal, and very enjoyable in the cooler weather. We were tasked with removing seed heads from flax plants growing in Victoria Park. These were broken down into a container so that the seeds could be extracted for re-planting. The stems were being taken away to eventually be made into cloth. Flax is the plant and linen is the fabric made of flax. The fibres from the plant are processed and turned into flax linen to make clothing or bed linen for example. As we were working through the sheaves of flax, a family of field mice materialised from the bags and ran off to find a new home. Being small and rather cute, there weren't too many screams!
