Raking it in
2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Lambeth.
- Sunday, 14th of July 2019
This lovely Sunday afternoon, two intrepid GoodGymers from the South East trekked for hours upon hours (circa. 35 minutes) to the WILD south WEST of our beautiful city to give the lovely Mr and Mrs I a little help in their patch of green loveliness.
Arriving at just gone one and with the clouds hovering over us in ominous grey, Girija and I had an initial recce following which we decided on the only sensible way forwards, and a GG classic it is - the WTLM (weed, trim, and lawnmower) method.
Donning sturdy gloves and shooting the breeze on our shared employment as civil servants, we shot straight to it, attacking weeds as if they were nasty peeps who leak public documents drafted by servants of the public sphere.
Following 40 minutes of weeding and 5 minutes of trying to differentiate between weeds and flowers, we collected our efforts and raced to phase two, the trim. Whilst Girija worked wonders on the long grass, I attempted to start the lawnmower. A task, I am sad to say, which resulted in much disappointment and little lawnmower action.
Fear not though, dear reader! We GoodGymers are nothing if not resourceful.
A quick recalculation, spearheaded by Girija, and a quick review of the GG Manual pushed us to use the reliable WTR (weed, trim, and rake) method. As Girija trimmed and shaped the lawn (leaving a rather lovely flowerbed), I raked and spent my time thinking about how much raking is rather like combing a very big head.
100 minutes after we started, having swept and packed up our tools, we took a moment to admire our efforts with the ice cold Diet Cokes that Mrs I generously plied us with.
Thank you Mr and Mrs I for welcoming us so warmly into your home. We hope our work makes your little patch of green a space you can enjoy this summer!
