"Two and a quarter pounds of jam weigh about a kilogram"
Full disclosure on age here, but back in the 1970s (...) on the back of breakfast table cornflake packets were printed a series of rhymes to help with the change from imperial to metric units - the above one clearly stuck in my head and proved extremely useful in deciphering Mr J's wonderfully old school shopping list today at his local Waitrose.
Sadly, the shelves of the metrified(?!) modern supermarket don't always cater exactly for products in olde worlde pounds of the lb variety, so I was having to do a fair amount of reverse mental arithmetic to try and ensure Mr J got the correct quantities of sausages and bacon for his breakfast. Amazingly, and in spite of the unintended metric to imperial maths challenge, we came in just 78p over his budget - Mr J was delighted!
