After a brief break for a drink Gill, one of our keen foodies, was back at Hightown Baptist Church, ready for a second shift at FoodCycle. Working alongside the cooking team lead, it soon became obvious that her skills in the dessert department would not be needed as Aldi had very kindly donated 32 scrumptious looking cream cakes. As we were down on volunteers this would be a godsend in cutting down on the man and womanpower needed to create a three course meal for the guests. 5 bags of chopped swede and carrot were staring up at her, and although not skilled in vegetarian cuisine, Gill was soon working out how to create a meatless meatball. Before long she was boiling and mashing the root veg, creating a mound of bread crumbs, chopping up other miscellaneous veg and opening tins of chick peas. A tomtao sauce was soon bubbling away on the stove. And then came the task of compressing and shaping nearly 100 balls! Fortunately with the help of the team leader it didn't take too long to get them ready to go into the oven to bake. However it may be that Gill has now heard enough cheeky one-liners about spherical objects to last a lifetime. 'nough said. All that was left for her to do was to boil a vat of water and cook a mound of pasta to serve alongside; and finally 42 guests were soon tucking into a hearty and wholesome meal.
