This year in social work has been as crazy as any other year in social work. I work in a team that does Solution Focussed Brief Therapy with families in crisis. On top of neglect, abuse, county lines, poverty, disability and all the other things that families face, they also have faced COVID-19 and the side effects. Schools have not been able to support kids with individual timetables so easily and families have faced child care dilemmas and the financial hit. Social workers just wear PPE on visits to families but in the office, other than 2metres rules and cleaners, our offices are half full and mostly a pointless place we have to be.
HOWEVER by asking questions that draw out strengths and qualities there has been incredible resilience. Ending the year Dbit (my team) delivered Xmas presents and did an xmas online quiz. I trust the families I work with to keep me safe as much as I try to keep them safe...I wish I could trust politicians in charge who do not even try to connect with the most important people in society.
