Can we do it? Yes, we Rukhsana Khan!

I really couldn’t have anticipated what “a couple of hours helping the Rukhsana Khan Foundation food bank” meant. What an operation! An army of super-strong volunteers taking huge deliveries (and apparently a couple of deliveries were missing today!), crating up uncountable tins of beans, soup, rice pud, bottles of squash, jars of coffee… and then carrying the whole lot, crate by crate (weighing up to 15kgs each), up two flights of stairs and stacking them into three tightly packed storage rooms. Not to mention sorting and packing several hundred shopping bags of food for collection by food bank customers today. We also took deliveries of crates and crates of bread, veggies and meat for immediate distribution. The generosity of people to fund such a programme and provide donations, and the strength and will of the volunteers who take on this huge physical task every week are just mind blowing. The teamwork was slick and the spirits were high. A privilege to spend a couple of hours in the company of these amazing folks. I’ll surely be back (but I’ll make sure I have more than just an espresso for breakfast beforehand next time!!)
